Varad Bang

'The figures in my work are not portraits of specific individuals but expressions of attention, intimacy, distance, and becoming. While my technical language draws on the traditions of European realism, my subject matter is firmly grounded in contemporary India. I am drawn to the tension between solitude and intimacy: how a person can appear alone yet still evoke closeness, memory, or shared experience.'

Varad Bang is a figurative painter who lives and works in Maharashtra, India. He trained as an architect at CEPT University before pursuing a Diploma in Fine Arts at the Florence Academy of Art, Italy, where he later served as a studio assistant on a work scholarship.

Varad's exhibition history includes group shows in Pune and Florence, along with two presentations at Pristine Contemporary, New Delhi, in 2024. In 2025, he held his first solo exhibition, The Weight of Love, also at Pristine Contemporary.

His honors include a finalist position in the Portrait Society of America's Future Generation Competition and the top prize in the Aakar Portrait Competition by the Art Society of India. He has also taught at the Samsara Academy of Art in Hyderabad.

In his work, Bang paints charged, suspended moments where figures embody vulnerability, introspection, and quiet companionship. Using layered textures and intimate compositions, he explores the space between stillness and feeling, solitude and closeness. Though his technical approach is rooted in European realist traditions, his imagery remains grounded in contemporary India, often holding tenderness, memory, and uncertainty within a single frame.
